The origins of Titleist golf balls

The story of the Titleist golf ball begins in 1932 with Phillip E. “Skipper” Young, a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While playing a round of golf with his dentist, Young missed what should have been an easy putt. Suspecting the ball was at fault, he asked his dentist to X-ray it. The X-ray revealed that the rubber core inside the ball was not centred. Curious about whether this was a common issue, Young began examining more golf balls. The results were surprising, many were poorly constructed, with off-centre cores that could cause erratic shots. Determined to solve the problem, Young set out to design a golf ball with a perfectly centred core, and Titleist was born. His goal was simple: create a ball that golfers could trust.

How Titleist revolutionised golf ball design

Young’s solution came through engineering innovation. He developed a machine capable of uniformly winding rubber thread around a rubber core, ensuring the centre of the ball was perfectly balanced. This breakthrough led to the creation of the first Titleist golf ball, designed to deliver consistent performance and accuracy. The name “Titleist” itself symbolised success. Young believed the ball had “won the title” in the quest to create the best possible golf ball for the game. Manufacturing began under the Acushnet Process Company, which would go on to become one of the most influential companies in golf equipment.

Key milestones in Titleist golf ball history

Over the decades, the history of Titleist golf balls has been marked by a series of innovations and milestones that helped establish the brand as a leader in golf ball technology.

1930 – The First Titleist Ball

Young developed a machine that could uniformly wind rubber string around a rubber core, making a “dead center” golf ball. He named the ball “Titleist,” noting it was the “winner” of the quest to create the best for the game.

1935 – Titleist Becomes Acushnet’s Leading Product

The golf division of the Acushnet Process Company produced the Titleist golf ball, which had consistently been the company’s most successful product.

1948 – Introduction of Dynamite Thread

Introduced “Dynamite Thread” to increase the yardage of their balls.

1949 – Titleist in the U.S. Open

Titleist became the most used ball at the U.S. Open Tournament.

Why Titleist golf balls became the tour standard

Over time, continued innovation and consistent quality helped the Titleist golf ball become the preferred choice for many of the world’s top golfers.

Key years in the company’s growth include:

  • 1976 – Titleist was purchased by American Brands (now known as Fortune Brands).
  • 1985 – Fortune Brands sold off the Acushnet Company’s Acushnet Rubber division, which was Acushnet’s original business (circa early 1900s).
  • 2002 – Titleist surpassed $1 billion in annual revenue
  • 2011 – Fila Korea and Mirae Asset Private Equity acquired Acushnet for $1.23 billion

Today, the company is headquartered in Fairhaven, Massachusetts and employs thousands across the region. Manufacturing facilities, research centres, and custom golf ball plants continue to develop the next generation of Titleist golf ball technology.

From a single missed putt to becoming the most trusted ball on professional tours, the history of Titleist golf balls shows how innovation, persistence, and attention to detail can change an entire sport.
