A Legendary Links - Frequently referred to as the St. Andrews of Ireland, Lahinch Golf Club looks out on the ever changing Atlantic Ocean, and is subject to all her mood swings. However, comparisons between the two famous courses go much further as their respective citizens share a common love and enthusiasm for the game of golf. The two courses at Lahinch Golf Club were actually first planned by officers of a Scottish Regiment, who considered this rugged and uncompromising countryside of Co. Clare perfect terrain for golf. The original layout for the course was the brainchild of Old Tom Morris, himself a four times British Open champion. Subsequent alterations were put in the capable hands of Scottish architect Dr. Alastair MacKenzie, who has also worked on Augusta, Pebble Beach and Cypress Point. The main championship links at Lahinch Golf Club (Par 72, 6,950 yards) is justifiably proud of the reputation it has gathered as a stern challenge to even the most gifted of golfers. The notorious Klondyke par five, 4th hole forces the golfer to play over an intimidating dune wall to a 'blind' green. Of the twin courses at Lahinch Golf Club, the Castle Course (Par 70, 5,653 yards) presents golfers with a slightly less formidable, though equally interesting prospect. “Lahinch will make the finest and most popular course that I, or I believe anyone else, ever constructed.“ Dr. Alastair Mackenzie

Lahinch Golf Club (Old Course)

COURSE DETAILS
Tralee Golf Club

Built by Palmer - Created by Nature. A sensational Arnold Palmer designed links course alongside a beautiful rugged coastline where one can see the ocean from every hole and a seascape, which was described by Peter Dobereiner as being ‘in a different class even to California‘s Monterey Peninsula.‘ Exhilarating golf with cliff top greens and tees offer magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean, dingle Peninsula and Kerryhead. Like the terrain the region is steeped in history with St Brendan having been born nearby in 484AD. The magnificent beach and surrounds featured prominently in the epic film Ryan‘s Daughter. On the gentler outward nine you will negotiate the 6th, 7th and 8th known locally as Palmer‘s loop. The back nine is a world of extraordinarily wild and massive dunes. The 12th hole is probably the most examining 2nd shot hole in golf where you are faced with a second shot to an elevated green with a deep ravine protecting the green. From the 14th tee there is a breathtaking view of Banna Strand which is renowned in song and story. The downhill par three 16th and the doglegged 17th are two more outstanding holes. On reaching the sanctuary of the clubhouse you can sit with your friends for a pint and scan the extraordinary golf course you have just played and to which you will want to return time and time again. “I have never come across a piece of land so ideally suited for the building of a golf course. I am happy we have one of the world‘s great links.“ Arnold Palmer

Waterville Golf Links

Championship Links, beautiful yet pure - a mystical experience - Links land is a geological rarity. Less than one percent of all courses in Europe are championship links. Waterville Golf Links is honoured to be included among the very best of these in a prestigious Golf World survey. It is one of the oldest Irish Clubs, having been founded in 1889 with the arrival of the trans-Atlantic telegraph cable from Newfoundland, Canada. After 80 years of play, the original nine hole course was redesigned by the famous Irish golf architect, Eddie Hackett and the late owner, John A. Mulcahy. Today Waterville is truly mystical. The course gradually introduces the player to its special tempo and rhythm and concludes with a symphony of links beauty. From Henry Cotton to Mark O‘Meara and Tiger Woods, all have praised its perfection. The Clubhouse at Waterville Golf Links is unique with ocean vistas, golf art, antique memorabilia and the warm ambience of its members. The restaurant and pub feature fresh seafood, Irish Fare and the best pint in Kerry, all served by the glow of turf fires. The Links resort includes Waterville Golf Links, Waterville House, the Directors residence, and a four-star 18th-century manor. Guests enjoy preferential access to Golf Links and one of the finest salmon and sea trout fisheries in Ireland. “Swing Courses Waterville and Ballybunion helped me realise the dream of a lifetime - victory in the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale the following week!“ Mark O‘Meara (1998)
